Earlier this year, Craig Schley was helping organize community opposition to the rezoning of the 125th Street corridor, a pet project of Rep. Charlie Rangel. Now, Schley finds himself running an underdog independent campaign against Rangel, the 19-term Democratic incumbent from Harlem who has helped generate a wave of gentrification and mega-development projects in his district.
“I believe in maintaining the integrity of the community and culture by developing and building low-income housing so you secure a workforce that will sustain the type of businesses making money off its culture,” says the 45-year-old Schley. A former firefighter and model with a degree in political science, Schley describes himself as “a blue-collar man with a white-collar education.”
Running under the banner of the “Voices of the Everyday People for Change Party” that he founded, Schley gathered 6,000 signatures, nearly twice the 3,500 needed to secure a spot on the ballot. He has a volunteer staff of 10 and appears almost daily at senior centers, bookstores, churches and anywhere else he can find an audience.
Schley’s campaign has raised about $13,000 this election cycle while the watchdog website opensecrets.org reports that Rangel has amassed $4.82 million from his perch as chairman of the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee, which writes all federal tax legislation.
Rangel, the fourth-longest serving Democrat in Congress, has been dogged by scandals this year, including the discovery that he had failed to report taxable income from a villa he owns in the Dominican Republic to that he was living in four rent-stabilized apartments in Manhattan. Rangel is currently the subject of a U.S. House Ethics Committee investigation. His close ties to the real estate industry have exasperated many constituents desperate for affordable housing, while his outspoken support for Hillary Clinton in her primary race against Barack Obama has stirred talk that Rangel is out of touch with the community.
“I think Rangel is not effective anymore in this community,” says Marietta Ford, a 23- year resident of Harlem. “He has been there for 40 years, and I’ve seen the gentrification of Harlem, there’s no affordable housing anymore. People don’t have jobs,” she says. “I think he doesn’t represent the people of the district anymore ... I am one of the people who are fed up.”
“I go door to door to let people know they shouldn’t vote for Rangel anymore,” says Carolyn Noel, a Harlem resident for more than 50 years. She added “[Schley] is a viable candidate and we’re behind him 100 percent.”
The 15th Congressional District stretches from the Upper West Side to Washington Heights/Inwood and includes Rikers Island and a part of northwestern Queens. While Rangel remains confident, his support of freetrade deals has also stirred opposition. Critics say pacts like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) have helped send tens of thousands of high-paying manufacturing jobs from New York State to low-wage nations in the Global South.
New York State has lost some 200,000 manufacturing jobs since 2000, and according to analysis by the Economic Policy Institute, New York could potentially lose another million to off-shoring.
“The continued outsourcing of New York jobs is not inevitable,” says Mark Bergen, director of the New York Citizens Trade Coalition. “Failed trade policies like NAFTA give expansive protections to U.S. firms that ship investment and jobs offshore. If we change our trade policy, we can change the future and keep jobs in the state rather than shipping them overseas.”
“I am against NAFTA and CAFTA and what it stands for: imbalanced trade and the loss of jobs,” Schley says. “One is unable to discuss trade without labor rights and these international trade agreements erode rights.”

Craig Schley is an Opportunistic Manipulative Model Wannabe who mooches off other peoples work to get ahead. He is banking on the community’s dissatisfaction with the present Congressman to “get over” on Harlem. He is hoping that Harlem Residents will not look deeply into his “stuff” and just vote for him because they are unhappy with Rangel. His so called interest in the 125th Street Redevelopment fiasco was just a cover for his real goal to run against Charlie.
The problem that Harlemites face is that the present Congressman does not care about them and Craig Schley does not care about them. Craig Schley is just a younger version of the present self-absorbed Congressperson. This places Harlem in a nebulous no-where land with no one to vote for.
Harlem has got to do a better job in developing leaders who care about Harlem. Craig Schley of Vote People and Vote People for Change Party is not one of them.
Maybe with the $13,000 dollars he fooled people into giving him, he can pay his debts.
Charles Rangel needs to go, but Craig Schley the opportunistic and Manipulative Wilhelmina Model should not replace him. Harlemites need to do a better job in developing leaders and Craig Schley needs to go back into the calculating and controlling abyss from which he came.

Ok. First of all, I think you need to come up with new material. You have this same post on numerous other websites.. think of something new to say.
You make a lot of accusations with absolutely nothing backing them up... you are not convincing anyone.
Rangel has a clear track record, as pointed out in this, among other stories
But from what do you derive your childish kindergarten attacks of Schley from?
Grow up
Charlie Rangel's silence on many of Harlem's problems can lead one to think that he doesn't care about Harlem anymore. But I don't know if I would go as far as thinking he's the main one responsible for a lot of Harlem's gentrification problems. This is mainly a result of the actions coming from Harlem's local leadership: City Council Members Inez Dickens, Robert Jackson and Melissa Mark-Viverito.
As far as Craig Schley is concerned I'm not sure he's the answer either. I've gone to a couple of his appearances so I could get a handle on what he's about. He never really gives you an idea on how he plans to attempt to solve some of the problems he's identified. To add, there is no real track record of any kind. While it's true that he initiated a lawsuit against the city for city council's callous act of passing the 125th Street Rezoning plan no one knows anything about the grounds for the action or its present status; and there were more worthy opponents out there fighting against this rezoning plan. What else has he done for the neighborhood or what are his accomplishments? We don't need one issue candidates.
That said, I still may vote for him and after 2 years (because there will be a few others to run in the next election) if he doesn't prove to be the person for the job I along with others will vote him out. But I am getting tired of Rangel's lack of gratuitous participation. Then again I just may wake up that morning and vote for Rangel thinking the same thing - voting him out next time around when there are more formidable candidates to vote for.

A Harlemite-maybe, but true, not in the least.
kay, I understand your frustration with Craig Schley. you have an obsession with him that you can't seem to let go of. you have worked with him earlier this year and perhaps part of last year. The problem here isn't a professional one with you; it's personal. you really have to come to terms with the fact that he was not interested in you in the way you thought he would be; and be on with your life. Displaying your scornful reaction to a man who does not react in your favor is not becoming and is really pitiful. You don't represent the progressive Black woman-or any woman really when you act out your resentfulness like this. So you should try to release that hurt ego feeling and try to apply yourself to something a little more constructive.
you have my sympathy.

I was just emailed this article and have read the string of responses. Sounds like personal stuff going on here. Be that as it may, a handsome man Mr. Shley is, but what else does this man have going for himself? He was a model, a fire fighter (was that volunteer or paid) but what else. I attended the Manhattan Borough President's town hall meeting at the Harlem School of the Arts a few weeks back and heard Mr. Schley speak. I wasn't really impressed. I am curious to know why haven't some of the more known community advocates like Nellie Bailey or Julius Tajudeen (?) or other free minded politician, like Charles Barron, or someone, with track records in the community, publicly endorsed him? I believe I saw Ms. Bailey and Mr. Tajudeen sitting with Mr. Schley at the meeting but I haven't seen any other evidence from media or otherwise showing the mentioned individuals' support. That troubles me. Sometimes silence is a way of making a statement. Correct me if I am wrong. Maybe I haven't been keeping up well enough. But if Mr. Schley loses his bid for congress perhaps he can show how much he cares for his constituency by doing more community active things, then the public will have more to go by and it wouldn't really matter who he hangs out with or who endorses him. His actions will speak for itself.
Nellie Bailey, Julius Tajiddin and Craig Schley equals Hell Trinity.
To living In hell..I mean Harlem, you are the kind of person that keeps progressive minded people from advancing in this society. Your backward-way of thinking is not healthy for anyone; so keep it to your self.
L H
I just got linked to this string and read all of the above. While I agree with some of what's been said I don't agree with the personal attacks. But what can you do. These blogg venues will produce these types of responses. But I am interested to know "Living in Harlem" why do you say that Nellie Bailey, Julius Tajiddin and Craig Schley equals Hell Trinity? What have you done for the community you live in? Nellie Bailey is a hard worker. So his Julius Tajiddin. Yes they are outspoken. Sometimes what they say I don't agree with at the time but I do give it thought and find later most of the time that what they've said turns out to be on point. Their activity has also produced results. I can't say too much about Craig Schley because I haven't seen him around too much and don't know all that much about him, except for what he has on his website.
When we hear rumors we should try to get to the truth of the matter or close to it as possible. Yes I have heard negative things about Nellie, and Julius as of lately. And what I have heard doesn't add up to what I have seen in the past. I heard things about Inez before. And you know what? Her actions support what I have heard.
So before you say certain people equal Hell Trinity give people something to go on. Maybe I might agree with you. Maybe I shouldn't support people like Nellie Bailey or Julius Tajiddin. Maybe they are just like Inez Dickens, Robert Jackson, Leroy Comrie and other sell outs. But I see Nellie and Julius out there giving people the time of day, sharing information to help people, on T.V. criticizing people who are hurting Harlem and many orther things. Both of them have gone to court with people when these people had no other alternative. Some faired out well and some things didn't work out.
But now that you put a little suspicion in my mind I will talk to these people and see what's up. I heard that Julius knocked out a skin head on 125th Street because the skin head called an elderly woman a bitch. Maybe that's a rumor. Maybe that didn't happen. I heard some other positive things about him and Nellie. Maybe these are rumors started by them. I am going to start asking around. But just saying someone equals Hell Trinity doesn't say much. When people do good that's when you start to hear bad stuff. Are they too planning to run for office? Maybe you work for Inez Dickens or Charlie Rangel yourself and you are trying to smear their name. How do I know?
Let's get real and not be part of the problem. If your sister or brother has offended you go to that person. We have to stop hating each other. We don't have time or it's not in our best interests to harbor ill will toward one another. (I assume you're Black, right?) Forget all that foolishness about I don't like her or him, "can't stand that so and so." But I'll bet when "another" steps on the back of your heel you'll tip toe through the tulips. Maybe not you per se, but you know what I mean.
Let's talk about Unity and how do we make people who take the leadership position serve their community since we don't want to take on that leadership position.
Are you feeling me everyone?

This is the most sensible thing I read in this string of comments. I am all about making peace. I say that if anybody has a problem with Craig Schley, Nellie Bailey or Julius Tajiddin that person should go to one or each of them and say what's on his or her mind. Find out before spreading a rumor. As for my own personal opinion there are some people out there that are terrible.
A Peacemaker
Get educated: Come out to the Harlem Tenants Council Townhall Meeting on Thursday, October 30th form 6 to 8 PM at Mt. Olivet Church at 120th & Lenox Avenue. Verbal attacks against me, or anyone else knee deep the opposition trenches taking pot shots at corporate centered gentrification in Harlem, cannot and will not alter the reality of Black politicians putting Harlem on the auction block. It's not me but Councilwoman Inez Dickens who negotiated a deal with billionaire Mayor Bloomberg to bring in 3,845 units of luxury housing within a 24 block radius of 125th Street from 2nd Avenue to Broadway; it was Councilwoman Melissa Mark Viverto who pushed through Bloomberg's special initiative, East 125th Street Development that is boasting the construction of 600 to 800 units of mostly luxury housing, a hotel and a multiplex entertainment Center. Do you really want Harlem’s commercial thoroughfare dominated by luxury housing far beyond the reach of the average Harlemites whose earnings are less than $25,000 annually.
And it was Council members Robert Jackson, Dickens, Viverto and MBP Scott Stringer who delivered 18 acres of land including sidewalk, road and underground land to Columbia University, the third largest landlord in New York City. Columbia, itself, admits over 5,000 low income residents will be displaced during their 20 year construction period but we know the numbers will be much, much higher! For in fact, they want to eventually dominate the West Harlem corridor all the way up to their medical facility at 168th Street & Broadway. Columbia's 1968 rebelling students who occupied President Grayson Kirk's office discovered this scheme according to the New York Times at the time.
The avarice and greed of Columbia is boundless, they get the special privilege of confiscating private properties for their private gains through the abuse of eminent domain. It was Columbia University’s scientist Klaus Jacobs who exposed in the Village Voice the real danger of Columbia’s plan to build eight stories of bio-research facilities underground where they will experiment with dangerous pathogens such as emboli, this within a densely populated neighborhood of mostly public housing tenants. AND YOU FOLKS WANT TO GET AN ATTITUDE WITH ME!
Evictions are up throughout Harlem and harder times are coming! Even with the Wall Street melt down Bloomberg is itching for another four years to complete his class and ethnic cleansing agenda. Why do you think Whites are organizing in Williamsburg, Latinos in Willets Point, Asians in Lower East Side and Chinatown, Dominicans in Washington Heights & Mexicans & Latin American immigrants in El Barrio. What in the world do you folks think this all means? Bloomberg wants us out of here! It’s so clear but not to those who have deliberately chosen blindness or as I suspect, just another bunch of reactionary folks trying to hide in the woodpile.
Those who care about Harlem and keeping it out of the hands of Manipulative Self-Absorbed people need to read the words of posster DocForTots at the following Blog.

To Living in Harlem: You put Julius Tajiddin in the same category as Craig Schley and Nellie Bailey? Now I know you are a fraud or someone who is on the take. I won't speak bad about certain people unless they are grossly neglegent or grossly fake. I can't get with that. Personally, I don't find Nellie or Craig for that matter to be like that. But to state that Julius Tajiddin is equal to 1/3 of a Hell Trinity you sound like you were paid by Inez Dickens or Robert Jackson. You couldn't honestly name anything he's done to hurt the community or an individual.
Why, he's Hell Trinity because he's against over development and you're for it or against pushing Black people out of the neighborhood and you're for gentrification? He's Hell trinity because he's about self determination for his people and you believe that other people should determine what's good for us?
I know him personally but that's not why I am defending him. I see what he does for the community and he's more than talk. He does things for the community without the lights and camera and has been successful. Talk to him and get to know him or ask people who really know him what do they think about him. He's always around and he's not stand offish, so don't use that as an excuse.
Member of the Community
And to be honest with everyone, he (Julius) should be running against Charlie Rangel. He's more than qualified. Then you would really have a good choice. But he felt that he couldn't succeed without holding some kind of lower public office seat first. I disagree. It's not like I could force him. I hope he makes up his mind about city council because we need someone like him representing us and not some of these other folks going around as of lately declaring their candidacy for various public office positions.
MOC
No one who really knows any of these people are voting for Nellie Bailey, Julius Tajiddin and Craig Schley.
To Living in Harlem. You are probably right. The people who really know these three people are people who probably will be voting for Inez Dickens, Robert Jackson, Charles Rangel and the likes. Schley can't be as bad as Rangel. And if Schley doesn't work out in two years, bye-bye. It's not like he'll be given a chance to do real damage. This is what you call damage control Living in Harlem. But is Living in Harlem a person for the people or is Living in Harlem a Rangel/Inez Dickens supporter? Because that's what it sounds like.
A Real Harlem Warrior
I am posting this here because it has not posted yet at a blog and Harlem should know before the election.
Level Headed you sound like you are the one having a desired relationship with Craig Schley given the way you are defending him. You obviously came into this late and are only repeating what you have been told. (But actually Craig = Level (Lying) Headed you are probably trying to talk yourself into believing what you say like OJ)
It is a shame that some Black men try to cover up their theivery by lying on women and implying that the women want relationships with them. Pay your bills and stop lying Craig. This behavior reflects on what kind of a politician you would be. Just another lier.
Vote People began late last year. It consisted of Craig, Erika and a group of Black Women. The women in the group brought different expertise to the group. Since Craig had no expertise in anything relevant to getting Vote People up and running.
None of the women other than Erika had an obvious "relationship" with Craig despite Craig and Erika's thinly veiled attempts to cover it up.
Also, no one was employed by Craig. It was crystal clear that you were ignorant of the facts when you indicated that on the HarlemWorldblog.
Craig misrepresented the mission of the group. Initially he made it look like it was about fighting against the 125th Street Rezoning. Craig was actually forming the group so he could run against Charlie Rangel. This mission change was disclosed after a large amount of work was put into the Vote People by the Black women. Erika was aware of his plans and attempted to manipulate the rest of the group into going along with him.
The group which had no bylaws or formal procedures, eventually broke up because of Craig's changing of the mission, constant bullying and insults. Erika seemed to like it, the Black women didn't. The women asked for their work back since they had not legally released it to Vote People. He and Erika have refused to return the work and have continued to use their work. Craig then moved on to joining other groups in order to get members for Vote People.
It is also common knowledge that earlier this year, Craig was allowed to enter a meeting that was being held by esteemed Black women in the community by misrepresenting why he wanted to speak to them. After he was allowed into the meeting he began to abuse, berate and and accuse the women of using him and Vote People. This is another example of his misrepresentation and abuse of women he attempted to use and felt he no longer needed to help him achieve his goals.
Now, there appears to be someone with a child claiming harassment from him over many years. Seems like he misrepresented himself to her as well.
Lies, Lies, Lies.
What next?
Probably more lies.
Harlem better wake up to Craig Schley before it is too late.
2 seconds of Nellie Bailey, Julius Tajiddin and Craig Schley in any political position would be too much. They are too much (negative) already..
To Living in Harlem. I turned someone on to this string of blogs and asked this individual who seems to have a sense of who's who and what's going on to tell me what's what. It seems that you are someone who is on the Inez Dickens and Charlie Rangel ticket. The only thing negative are your negative comments. There is too much (negative) on Charlie Rangel already. There is too much on Inez Dickens, CB 10, Hazel Dukes, anybody you name probably, already. But you never mention what is so negative about these three; although maybe you don't have to with Craig, now that I've read what In The Know said.
I can tell you that Charlie Rangel's apartments situation, his taxes, hiring a lawyer using campaign funds to defend his tax crisis; Inez Dickens voting for the Columbia Expansion, 125th Street Rezoning, Term limit Extension; Hazel Dukes pleading guilty to stealing $13,000 dollars from an elderly woman are some of the negative stuff well known about in Harlem. You just make comments but don't give anything else to support what you say. Do you live in Harlem even?
If you live in Harlem and are serious about saving Harlem talk with substance. And now that I think about it, maybe I'm wasting my time on this blog. This seems to be an internet gossip colummn.
Harlem Warrior
Do not vote for Craig Schley!
Hold your nose and vote for Rangel today!
Get rid of Rangel when Harlem gets a worthy candidate to run against him!
The Harlem community must take some of the blame for the situation we are in. We presently have a politician who does not care about us (Rangel) and a wannabe manipulative politician who does not care about us (Schley) or apparently his child (See "DocForTots" Posts - http://harlemworldblog.wordpress.com/2008/09/03/craig-schley-challenges-...). The community has allowed Rangel to stay in power for almost 40 years. We must take the blame for this.
Harlem must groom younger or better folk for the challenge. We cannot allow Rangel to have another cycle after this election.
Obama has proved to us that we can make a change. But he means a change for the better and not as a premise to elect a “Baby Daddy" trying to get over without taking responsibility. (See "Grown Lady" Posts - http://harlemworldblog.wordpress.com/2008/09/03/craig-schley-challenges-...).

Let's all chip in to buy TH a dildo. I got $.05
Let Craig Schley (= Anononalizia) apply the $7,000 missing from the amount that he said he raised at the Community Board 10 meeting last Wednesday.
(Remember the amount noted in the above article is $13,000. Craig Schley said he raised only $6,000 at the Board meeting).
I am sure that TH would have no problem using it on him since he is such a big A.. Hole.
Or, he could just allow Erica to continue using it on him and him on his followers.
this is soooo funny yet sick at the same time. a male model talking about buying somebody a dildo. craig you are an idiot. your stuff is all out there. you need to shut up. but, i guess you can't with that dildo in your mouth after you removed it from your ass.
There seems to be a tide rising against Rangel and Inez Dickens but it is going to take a well organized camp to even have a chance against them... They are the Good ol political Club of Harlem. A lot of powerful people will do what ever it takes to keep that political block in power.
With that said there is a small group of people organizing in Harlem with the goal of changing the political Landscape in Harlem. They are well organized and have about 300 members. I am going to their meeting on Dec 4th.... They are on facebook, uptowndems. I am not sure if they are trying to run for office or make sure the young peoples voices are heard but they are doing it the old fashion way with a touch of todays technology. They are running multiple community service and voter registration projects. They want to continue the Obama wave with a focus on local issues. For Obama plan of change to happen we have to change local offices also...
Craig Schley is cool but a third party does not have a chance in harlem... it has to be a Dem.
I think this young group might take them on eventually but they want to build up their forces first.
