Thousands Line the Streets of 7th Avenue, Calling for an End to the Israeli Assault on Gaza

Anger and anguish were expressed as thousands of people rallied at Times Square Sunday afternoon, calling for an immediate end to the Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip, which has entered its third week, and an end to U.S. support for Israel.
The rally and march to the Time Warner building near Columbus Circle was organized by the Break the Siege on Gaza Coalition-NY, which includes a number of local pro-Palestinian organizations. Time Warner was targeted because the demonstrators say that CNN and other media outlets are not showing the truth about Gaza.
“There is no gas, no food, no electricity over there [in the Gaza Strip]. A lot of people are dying…We should stop all of this,” said Jamal Mick, a Palestinian originally from the West Bank city of Ramallah. He said he had friends in Palestine who had died as a result of the recent Israeli incursion.
At the end of the demonstration, skirmishes broke out between NYPD officers and protesters, and pepper spray was used on some demonstrators. Two people could be seen being led away in handcuffs. It was unclear what led to the skirmish and subsequent use of pepper spray. After the rally ended, a Palestinian youth-led breakaway march started, resulting in an hour long game of cat and mouse between about 15 police officers on scooters and the group of about a hundred or so youth. At one point, the group of Palestinian-Americans gathered in a circle, with one person leading chants of “Gaza, Gaza, don’t you cry, Palestine will never die!” and yells of “Allahu Akbar” (God is Great).
As the small group of pro-Palestine protesters zigged and zagged through the streets of the Theater District, a police officer who had previously been seen pushing some of the young demonstrators threatened to get his scooter and “run them over.” Eventually, the cat and mouse game ended with most of the breakaway marchers running into a subway station.
Chanting “Free, Free Palestine!” and “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free,” demonstrators spanned at least 3 city blocks listening to the slew of speeches through loudspeakers.
“As a Latina, I condemn what is going on in Palestine,” said Teresa Gutierrez of the May 1 Coalition for Worker and Immigrant Rights. “Resistance is the only solution…Palestine will be free, Gaza will be free.” Gutierrez praised Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, who recently expelled the Israeli ambassador to Venezuela in protest and referred to the war on Gaza as a “holocaust.”
A diverse group attended the rally, which started at 1 PM, although Palestinian and Arab-Americans were clearly in the majority. Many people wrapped themselves in Palestinian flags and wore kaffiyehs, a symbol of Palestinian nationalism. It was the latest in a series of protests in New York City that has brought tens of thousands of people into the streets to speak out against the continuing Israeli air, naval and ground bombardments. The death toll is now close to 900 people, with almost 4,000 Gazans wounded in a war zone that is undergoing a severe humanitarian crisis.
At one point during the march to the Time Warner building, people started to chant, “Hey, Obama, we want change in Gaza.” The incoming Obama administration was clearly on the protesters’ minds as they looked ahead to the swearing in of the new president.
“The same bombs falling on the Palestinian people fell on the people of Fallujah, fell on the people of My Lai, fell on the people of Dresden,” Iraq War resister Matthis Chiroux said. “Barack Obama must not be silent, for it is on his silence that bombs will fall on men, women and children.”
President-elect Obama has only tepidly commented on the situation in the Gaza Strip, repeating the mantra that “there is only one president at a time.” In his only substantive remarks on the war on Gaza, Obama said, “the loss of civilian life in Gaza and in Israel is a source of deep concern for me.”
Jewish demonstrators made it clear that Israel did not speak for them. One women, Judith Ackerman, held up a sign that read, “Jews for Peace,” with a Star of David and peace sign on it. “This killing is absolutely Nazi-like…I wear this sign to show people that there is a difference between Israelis and Zionists and Jews,” Ackerman said.
A contingent of Anti-Zionist Orthodox Jews was in attendance. “We want the world to know that Zionism is stealing the identity of the Torah and of the Jewish people,” Rabbi Yisroel Weiss of the Neturei Karta movement said.
A much smaller pro-Israel counter-demonstration was held across the street from the pro-Palestine demonstration.
“I’m here for the children, the women, and for the men who could not feed their kids in Palestine and in Gaza,” said Angie Abu-Alam, an Egyptian-American demonstrator.
UPDATE: Mainstream media outlets are reporting that police officers were injured at the rally. The New York Times reports:
“Seven police officers were injured during a scuffle between pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian protesters in Manhattan on Sunday, the police said.
The police said they arrested 10 people and that charges were pending…”
CNN reports:
“In a statement, the NYPD said the officers were injured when trying to break up a fight between two demonstrators.
‘While attempting to separate the males, several others joined in and began to assault the officers,’ the statement said…”

7 cops were injured at the hamas rally. 10 people were arrested. At the rally for Israel at 42 and 2nd 10,000 people showed up. No police were injured and no one arrested. Sounds like the protesters in NYC are as violent as the “people” they identify with. Hamas and many of the Pals are racist and just want to kill Christians and Jews. Well, the dhimmis are standing up for themselves.

Hey jaytee, you are obviously misinformed..it’s not a hamas rally.. It’s a rally for the end of the violence in the middle east. You have failed to mention that people have been protesting for weeks and there never has been an incident. We will get an official statement soon. Hamas is not a terrorist organization they are a government..they set up the schools and police force and jobs. Go look at Jimmy Carter on Palestine on youtube, or Ron Paul on Palestine. You need to wake up man. Stop eating what they feed you on fox,and cnn. Rupert Murdoch gives you his message. Why don’t you check out news sources for yourself.
Look at the numbers :
“884 Palestinians dead, of whom 275 are children and 93 are women.Twelve medical personnel number among the fatalities. The number of injured stands at 3,860, of whom 1,333 are children and 587 are women. An estimated 413 are considered critically injured.”
There needs to be a stop to this war. They are killing the civilians and using illegal weapons. Muslims have lived in peace with orthodox jews for decades..its only the zionists who have torn them apart. You can see that on youtube as well. They don’t want to show you this in the media because then people would wake up.
Everybody here in New York lives in peace no matter where you are from..the world needs to learn from us. God Bless America!

Please keep up the pressure my friends it is important. Children are dying as you read my words and Israel can stop this. Killing children in order to get “a bad guy” is an absurd, twisted way of thinking. Israel is not committing self defense it is committing atrocities and soul-icide. May Israel and the US come to its senses, and may Obama have wisdom.

What caused the problem between the police officers and the Palestinian Protesters was a Zionist Jew who had passed by and flung a Palestinian flag out of a palestinian girl’s hand and then proceeded to put the flag on the floor and step on it.. When the Palestinian protesters caught him and began to hit him, the nyc police got involved and started pepper spraying most of the protesters nearby. That Zionists had been circling the block a few times…sticking his middle finger up and trying to start a fight with the protesters, then finally decided to grab one of the flags that the protesters were waving and step on it. The Palestinians reacted as anyone else would’ve reacted. There have been atleast four or five protests before this one in NYC…. and none of them were violent. That one act by the Zionists is what made the outburst. The NYC cops should have noticed that he was trying to cause trouble and should have kept him from coming so close to the Palestinians. The emotional state and mind of the Palestinians right now can not endure such humiliation from a zionist stepping on their flag. They’ve been watching on their television screens all the inhumane acts of war that Israel is doing to their people in Gaza, and all they can do for them is protest and make people more aware of their struggle in Palestine. For that one Zionist to pass by and be so disrespectful to their cause and their right to protest shows you that this Zionist movement has no conscience or dignity whatsoever. Palestinians here in the United States feel helpless and the least you can allow them do is voice their anger and support for their people in Gaza. The death toll is Gaza has reached 900 innocent civilians ….half of them children and women. The injured are more than 4200…..half of them children and women. Five hundred of them in very bad condition. There has to be a stop the these daily massacres that Israel does to the people of Gaza. May God be with them and help them overcome this atrocity towards humanity. Palestinians are not racist, infact palestinian muslims and palestinian christians are dying together for the same cause. There are Jews who support Palestine marching together with the Palestinian Protesters. You need to watch news broadcast outside the United States, to understand what is really happening in Gaza. The BBC, and hispanic channels, the Japanese news, anything outside the United States which unfortunately hides Israeli Crimes towards Palestinian people in Gaza. This is the first paper I have read from the beginning of the war in Gaza that actually states the truth and is not Pro Israel. I thank any newspaper and journalist who reports the news the way it is and does not mislead the American people more than they are already mislead. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

1000 dead and the world stands by talking about how Israel must defend itself!! Let’s be very clear, Madoff has done more to hurt Israeli support (losing money meant for charities) than any Gaza missile. Look at the reaction in the USA when 3000 died on 9/11 and compare it to Gaza, and no one even occupied our lands or homes.
Militants on both sides are wrong and evil. However, until Palestinians have achieved their rights there will be no peace. For the past 20 years they have continually lost more and more land to Israeli settlers. Still today, bit by bit Israel is pushing them out. The US wonders why the world hates us. Look at what we condone by selling bombs and planes that are killing civilians. It must stop if we ever want to live in peace.

I do not see how there can be any peace at all anymore. The present Israeli military regime has done so much war crimes during the past days which is totally unforgivable. Over 200 children dead. How can there ever be peace with that permanent scar on the hearts of the Palestinians. There is no more chance for peace or truce ever again until the Israeli military regime has paid for their war crimes, and they completely withdraw from all the occupied territories. Until they leave the Palestinians alone. There is no hope. This massacre and the silence of the world leaders is unforgivable. No amount of diplomacy will ever erase the blood the runs in the streets and in the eyes of the people of Gaza, who had to watch their families, and babies massacred and torn to shreds by American made bombs. It is over until Israel military regime is over and the US ends its support.

What happened to the NYPD Motorcycle Officer who was thrown from his bike by the protesters? Once he was on the ground, he did not move. He was loaded into an ambulance. (8th Ave @ 55th). Photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/marklyon/sets/72157612460639500/
