Ready to combat neoliberalism and the gentrification of their neighborhoods, more than 100 activists and organizers convened in East Harlem on Sunday, June 7, in the second ever Encuentro. Hosted by The Movement for Justice in El Barrio, an immigrant organization fighting against gentrification in Harlem, the event voiced the struggles and frustrations of people from across the city, country and world. The Encuentro opened a space to share stories of injustice and repression and to unite in the struggle from across the city and world, including displacement in Chinatown, to the fight for affordable housing in storm-battered New Orleans, to the persecution of activists from The People’s Front in Defense of the Land in Atenco, Mexico.
